Tempeh Sloppy Joes

Using our house-ground cumin, this dish is full of warm, spicy and sweet flavors!


  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ cup yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 bell pepper, diced
  • 1 cup mushrooms, chopped
  • 1 8 ounce package tempeh
  • 1 teaspoon Stuart’s Spices Ground Cumin
  • ½ teaspoon Stuart’s Spices Cool Chili Seasoning
  • 1 13.5 or 15 ounce can crushed tomatoes
  • Hamburger buns
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Optional: vegan Italian blend or Parmesan cheese, we love the Daiya shreds!


  1. Heat the oil in a large pan over medium high heat
  2. Add the onion and cook
  3. Stir until soft and slightly browned, about 4 minutes
  4. Add garlic and pepper to the pan and cook, stirring occasionally until soft, about 5 minutes
  5. Add mushrooms, tempeh, cumin, Cool Chili, and the tomatoes
  6. Turn heat down to medium and simmer, stirring occasionally for 10-15 minutes until you reach the desired thickness
  7. Add salt and pepper to taste
  8. Remove from heat and ladle onto burger buns
  9. Serve and enjoy!


Need a simpler flavor profile? Use our Burger Blast blend in place of the Cool Chili.

Protein alternative: You can use any meat or alternative protein in place of the tempeh and the recipe will work just as well. We enjoy it with TVP!
